About the Artist:
Auguste Rodin (French, 1840-1917) is widely considered the founder of modern sculpture. In his teen years Rodin attended the Petite École, a school known for its specialization in art and mathematics. In 1857, Rodin submitted a clay sculpture to the École des Beaux-Arts, which began a long career of creating works that were nothing short of ground breaking.

Mignon is known to be one of the first of Rodin’s portraits. The bust of Mignon was made in the likeness of Rose Beuret, whom Rodin had met by 1864. Beuret had been a seamstress who went on to become his studio assistant, and later mother to their son Auguste-Eugène born in 1866. Rodin eventually married Beuret in 1917, who passed away within the year of pneumonia. Auguste Rodin, himself passed away months later due to complications of a stroke he had suffered.
