A moody portrait of an elegant young man attributed to Jan Van Neck (Netherlands, 1634-1714). The man is dressed in shirt, robe and mantle and shown holding a compass on a cord. He leans on a terrace under drapery with a landscape under gray skies beyond. Presented in a fine carved and painted wood frame.
Lined, with old labels and numerals on verso.
Originally ex coll. Cardinal Fesch (Uncle of Napoleon and art collector), later Bryan coll. According to the Bryan collection label, the original signature lower right was covered by that of Netscher incorrectly (the name of two 17th-18th c. Netherlands artists). Van Neck was a Golden Age Dutch artist known for portraits.

Presents well for its age overall. A tiny paint loss on the top of the head. Some slight expected wear to the antique frame.
