About the Artist:
Barye would have observed such animals in the Paris Zoo where he observed other ones in order to accurately depict them. The fierce energy of the attack is classic for the artist who specialized in such violent animal groups. Early cast ca. 1831 with later ones such as this example, all after a large scale sculpture.
Barye was the undisputed master of animal sculpture in his day. He acquired a patent for casting small scale bronzes in 1845 and partnered with Emile Marin in 1844 to produce them in quantity for middle class collectors. Their first catalogue was published in 1844 and was a great success
