Antoine-Louis Barye (French, 1796-1875) "Lion La Patte Levée Sur Un Serpent" cast bronze sculpture depicting an impressive lion sitting with one paw raised ready to strike a serpent over a naturalistic ground on an oval base. Signed on the base.
Originally modeled in 1832, this cast before 1847. This example is the third casting and a small variant of Barye's large scale work of Lion Crushing a Serpent of 1835. Barye would have observed lion behavior in the Paris Zoo where he learned to accurately depict a variety of animals.

About the Artist:
Barye was the undisputed master of animal sculpture in his day. He acquired a patent to cast small scale bronzes in 1838, and partnered with entrepreneur Emile Martin in 1845 to produce bronzes for middle-class collectors. The first catalogue was published in 1844 and was a great success.
