Antoine-Louis Barye (French, 1796-1875) "Gazelle D'Ethiopie" cast bronze sculpture depicting a sweet Ethiopian gazelle walking on mounds of grass. Mounted on a green stepped marble base. Signed and dated 1837 on the bronze base.
Barye modeled this work in 1834 but most casts are dated 1837. Two versions of the base were produced. This one with straight sides is the first made and dates before 1876, when another version was made. This bronze was a popular one during and after Barye's lifetime.

About the Artist:
Barye was the undisputed master of animal sculpture in his day. He acquired a patent to cast small scale bronzes in 1838, and partnered with entrepreneur Emile Martin in 1845 to produce bronzes for middle-class collectors. The first catalogue was published in 1844 and was a great success.
