Antoine-Louis Barye (French, 1796-1875) "Faisan (tête tournée à gauche)" cast bronze sculpture depicting a pheasant with an impressive, long tail standing proudly with large talons over an oval naturalistic ground raised on a bronze plinth. Mounted to a green marble base. Signed on the bronze base.
One of three versions of a standing pheasant, this one on an oval base, was first listed in his 1845 catalogue. Barye was noted for his accurate depictions of animals. The one on an oval base was also produced later ca. 1900 by Brame. This example has a slight curve to the end of the tail.

About the Artist:
Barye was the undisputed master of animal sculpture in his day. He acquired a patent to cast small scale bronzes in 1838, and partnered with entrepreneur Emile Martin in 1845 to produce bronzes for middle-class collectors. The first catalogue was published in 1844 and was a great success.
