Antoine-Louis Barye (French, 1796-1875) "Chat Assis" cast bronze sculpture depicting a sweet cast seated proudly with its head tilted down and its tail wrapped around its front paws. Mounted on a green marble base. Signed on the bronze base.

About the Artist:
Barye was the undisputed master of animal sculpture in his day. He acquired a patent to cast small scale bronzes in 1838, and partnered with entrepreneur Emile Martin in 1845 to produce bronzes for middle-class collectors. The first catalogue was published in 1844 and was a great success.
In the early 1870's he was often ill and worked at home in his workshop where his greyhound and cat were his companions. This seated cat is modeled after his own and is seen in a calm pose as opposed to Barye's many energetic animal representations.
