Antoine-Louis Barye (French, 1796-1875) cast bronze sculpture similar to Louis "Navatel" Vidal (French, 1831-1892) "Lion Rugissant" depicting a lion in a tense pose roaring with a gaping maw over a rectangular ground. Mounted to a tiered wood base. Signed Barye on the bronze base, lacking a foundry mark.

About the Artist:
Barye was the undisputed master of animal sculpture in his day. He acquired a patent for casting small scale bronzes in 1838 and partnered with Emile Martin to make small bronzes in quantity for middle class collectors. The catalogue was published in 1844 for the successful business.
