Antoine-Louis Barye (French, 1796-1875) "Le Tigre Qui Marche" cast bronze sculpture circa 1877. A fine study of a snarling tiger that Barye would have observed in the Paris Zoo in order to accurately depict it and other animals that he cast. This cast tiger was originally made as a pendant to the well-known Lion Qui Marche. Signed Barye and F. Barbedienne Fondeur and with their FB monogram in gold, all on the bronze base. Mounted on a wooden base with a rich warm brown finish.

About the Artist:
Barye was the undisputed master of animal sculpture in his day. He acquired a patent to cast small scale bronzes in 1838 and partnered with entrepreneur Emile Martin in 1845 to produce bronzes for middle-class collectors. The first catalogue was published in 1844 and was a great success.
