Marked Barye with a punch mark appearing to be Athena in a stamp with canted corners (I.e.. 950).
An important large heavy group in silver by the master French sculptor with a pack of three fierce mastiffs attacking the frightened fallen bear in the center. All on a textured foliate base.
An original group was cast for the duc d'Orleans in bronze circa 1834 for the commission for a Surtout de table representing hunts of different regions and time periods. The image was modeled 1834-1839 and first cast circa 1870. Later Barye made variants of the original group. This example is related to the duke's "Bear Hunt" example and is the same group as the bronze in The Waters Art Gallery, Baltimore, Barye also worked in silver and this is a fine and important example.

He also studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts, making his salon debut in 1827. After 1831, he was commissioned to cast groups of animals in violent compositions, as with this subject for the duc d'Orleans in ca. 1834.
After 1842 he turned to marketing small scale bronzes. He became director of Plaster Casting at the Louvre in 1848. and the young Rodin briefly studied with him in 1863. Later in life he was commissioned to produce monumental works of lions and tigers.
