Antoine-Louis Barye (France, 1796-1875) "Lion Qui Marche" cast bronze sculpture produced by Ferdinand Barbedienne (French, 1810-1892) foundry depicting a lion with its maw open and tail curved walking proudly over a rectangular ground. Signed Barye and marked F. Barbedienne Fondeur along with their FB monogram in gold, on the bronze base. This particular large cast has a good greenish brown patina, ca. 1877. Mounted on a green marble base.

About the Artist:
Barye was the undisputed master of animal sculpture in his day. He acquired a patent for casting small scale bronzes in 1838 and partnered with Emile Martin to make small bronzes in quantity for middle class collectors. The catalogue was published in 1844 for the successful business.
