"Un tigre qui marche". Signed Barye on the bronze base along with F. Barbedienne Fondeur and their monogram FB stamped in gold on the bronze tiered ribbed base. One of the exotic animals that Barye modeled often after live ones that he observed in the zoo in Paris. The original model dates to 1836 and was cast after 1848.

About the Artist:
Barye was the undisputed master of animal sculpture in his day. He acquired a patent to cast small scale bronzes in 1838, and partnered with entrepreneur Emile Martin in 1845 to produce bronzes for middle-class collectors. The first catalogue was published in 1844 and was a great success.
