Antoine-Louis Barye (France, 1796-1875) "Tom Lévrier d'Algérie". Signed Barye France on the bronze base. Mounted on a red marble base (loose). Barye had been commissioned to sculpt a marble greyhound figure in 1868. He adopted a greyhound and named him Tom to serve as his model. The original plaster model for a marble work (now lost) was discovered much later and bronze casts were made posthumously post 1875. The sweet dog wears a collar and reclines quietly on the base.
Provenance: The estate of a lady, Mamaroneck, NY
Dimensions:
14" W x 2 7/8" D x 7 1/2" H, bronze
15 3/4" W x 4" D x 1 1/4" H, base
About the Artist:
Barye was the undisputed master of animal sculpture in his day. He acquired a patent to cast small scale bronzes in 1838, and partnered with entrepreneur Emile Martin in 1845 to produce bronzes for middle-class collectors. The first catalogue was published in 1844 and was a great success.
