"Lion assis No.1" Signed Barye and stamped France on the bronze base. This is the first version of the seated lion cast in 1847 and one of four versions that Barye produced. No.1 appeared in his and Emile Martin's new catalogue and was so successful that they produced three more versions. No.1 is a small scale version of the large scale one cast for the Tuileries Gardens in Paris. Mounted on a red marble base.

Barye acquired a patent for casting small sale bronzes and partnered with Martin to produce them in quantity for middle class collectors. Their catalogue printed first in 1844 was a great success.
