"Elephant d'Asie". Signed Barye on the bronze base. Ca. 1857. The elephant walks in a landscape with a tiered ribbed oval base. This elephant sculpture was first offered in Barye's catalogue in 1857. It follows the first African elephant and was produced as a pendant for that one. Mounted on an oval green marble base.

About the Artist:
Barye acquired a patent for casting small bronzes and partnered with Emile Martin in 1845 to produce them in quantity for middle class collectors. Their first catalogue was published in 1844 and was a great success.
