A period oil on board after William-Adolphe Bouguereau (French, 1825-1905) "Premier Deuil" ("First Mourning") depicting Adam and Eve mourning the loss of their son, Able. The board appears to be a composition or paperboard type used in the 19th century.
Displayed in a magnificent gilt frame with richly carved gesso relief incorporating acanthus leaves, fluting, berry and leaf trims, and rope trims for an impactful appearance overall. Affixed with a name plaque at the center denoting the original artist. The frame bears a P.J. Dumont label on the verso.

There appears to be minor in-painting around the edges, epically the lower left corner. Black light photos have been uploaded. Slight bow in the center of the painting typical of this type of board. Presents well overall. Some minor gesso checking to the frame.
