Idyllic Westchester Estate Conceals Veritable Mad-Men Era Time Capsule
On the Auction Block | PUBLISHED 07.03.18 | Jennifer Ventresca
Nestled in rolling hills overlooking the Westchester Country Club is a treasure trove of mid-century furniture, antiques, and curiosities hitting the auction block at BRG.
What is now considered a quiet, idyllic grand estate overlooking the rolling hills of the Westchester Country Club in Rye, New York was once a hot-bed of post-war era soirées with guests drinking martinis in the library of a stately stone and pillar colonial revival owned by renowned “renaissance man,” Arthur Judson. The contents of this estate will be available in our Rye Bellevue Single Owner Estate online auction closing on July 11.
Judson, who passed away in the 1970s and predeceased his wife by almost 20 years, was a founder of CBS with William S. Paley. He also spent much of his career as an artist’s manager, simultaneously managing both the New York Philharmonic and Philadelphia Orchestra. Additionally, Judson co-founded the Handel Society of New York and participated in a several philanthropic endeavors.
When we were approached by the estate’s executor to take on the task of liquidating the estate, managing partner, Grant Panarese, and estates and acquisitions manager, Rick Daley, were intrigued. Since Judson’s death, the well-tended estate remained in the family. However an impending private sale of the home is pushing the estate’s executor to liquidate much of the estate contents; albeit with a very short turnaround time. Where other industry professionals may have declined taking on such a large estate because of the tight deadline, the BRG team vigorously tackles the job — tight deadlines and all.
“Entering this impressive estate was like exploring a life-size time capsule filled with quality mid-century and post-war era fine furniture and art,” explains Daley. “We realize that Mr. Judson must have been a man of impeccable taste whose keen eye for only the finest of things helped him amass quite a collection — all of which is perched in this home overlooking the lush greens of an amazing country club.”
In this case, the Judson estate features a treasure trove of period furniture and desirable collections including:
♦ A large collection of Schmieg & Kotzian furniture (long considered the ‘creme de la creme’ of custom furniture), including this stunning dining table with four leaves and 12 chairs.
♦ A super cool vintage Ficks Reed bamboo and rattan sunroom suite, including this settee and pair of club chairs.
♦ A large and fine pair of Dore bronze crystal mounted wall sconces.
♦ And a couple of Joseph Hirsh (American, 1910-1981) original pieces of fine art, including this lovely oil on canvas entitled, "Girl Combing."
This is but a small sampling of several of the over three-hundred amazing pieces acquired in the residence. The estate collection is filled with antiques, vintage furniture, and an abundance of fine art. Books and a variety of curiosities round out the entire collection.
The Rye Bellevue Single Owner Estate will close on July 11, 2018.
