Elegance Redefined: Emily Brownell's Curated World at Gilded Hearth Interiors
Welcome to another week filled with curated elegance. This time, we shine the spotlight on Emily Brownell, the creative force behind Gilded Hearth Interiors. Emily Brownell's design philosophy is deeply rooted in her upstate New York childhood. Her love for natural elements evolved from there through her experiences in London, New York City, and her current home in Los Angeles.

The Journey to Authentic Design
Emily’s interior design philosophy reflects her belief that home is a feeling. Home is a place where timelessness meets a personalized twist.
She approaches her design projects by weaving her client's loves and lifestyle into the very fabric of their homes. She works to create spaces that exude an elevated, yet authentic sense of self, all while integrating vintage elements in interior designs.
Emily's design journey took her from the serene landscapes of New York’s Hudson Valley and Adirondacks to the bustle of city life. She eventually settled in Los Angeles with her husband and two children.

Q&A with Emily Brownell
In a candid Q&A session, we had the pleasure of delving into Emily's world of design:
|
How did you become interested in estate sales and online auctions?
My mother LOVES antiques. I have been hitting up stores and sales since my childhood. She is still the best stylist I know.
I aim to work as much vintage into a home as is called for. I am usually quite successful in that endeavor regardless of the space or the client’s style.

How do you describe your design style or aesthetic?
I approach design with a bespoke aesthetic. I work to design for the home and the client – which is exciting because I don't feel like I am working on the same project twice.

What are some things you always find yourself bidding upon in online auctions?
Vintage lighting! I feel lighting is the jewelry to your home and the best place to find unique handcrafted lighting is usually looking at the past.

What's your absolute favorite item ever purchased at an estate sale or online auction?
I have a John Kapel for Glenn of California Gentleman's chest in my dining room. It gets so much use as our 'everything storage' – from our bar to the kids' crafting items. The chest is functional with the most stunning walnut grain.
|
Share a story about when you regretted not purchasing an item you saw at an estate sale – that missed opportunity still lingering in your mind.
I wish I could say there is just one! Ha. Ha.
I think about a hand-carved pair of chairs that were from a carpenter’s studio. They truly were one of a kind. I still miss all the vignettes I could have made with those chairs.
|
What's the most unique or rare item you encountered during your experiences with estate sales and online auctions?
I have seen some stunning Murano glass lighting choices creep up lately. Murano glass lighting in vintage designs would make such an elegant statement and really transcend different styles and eras.
|
Any tips or advice for online auction or estate sale newbies?
You either need to enter them one of two ways. First, knowing exactly what you are looking for. Or you need to place bids on something you feel you will never find again and that really speaks to your heart.
