An Eye for Pattern & Texture: A Peek at Alison’s Designs

As you enter the living room, you are immediately drawn to the beautiful chinoiserie inspired space.

The red painted rattan chairs are exquisitely designed and strategically placed in front of two windows. A plush green sofa sits in the center of the room, creating a cozy seating area for you to sink into. The natural light from the two large windows framed by flowing neutral colored drapes creates a warm and inviting atmosphere.

The chinoiserie inspiration continues with the throw pillows on the sofa featuring designs of flowers and dragons. A tall dark wood cabinet between the windows contrasts beautifully with the lightness of the room and is adorned with vases and other decorative arts.

How did you become interested in estate sales and online auctions?

I've always loved estate sales and auctions.

Shopping estate sales and auctions during the pandemic moved online. It was a product of looking for unique pieces but not being able to go and search for them in person.

Now online estate sales and auctions are a convenient resource I can use at any hour. For myself and for my clients!

How do you describe your design style or aesthetic?

My aesthetic is very traditional with a twist. My favorite spaces are layered, colorful, and pattern-filled, but with a bit of an edge. And a sense of humor.

I love old houses and brown furniture, and I love them even more when they are juxtaposed with a modern piece of art or an unexpected wallpaper. It’s the play between old and new that I love so much. It’s what I think creates soulful and warm interiors.

What are some things you always find yourself bidding upon in online auctions?

I always find myself buying art, rugs, and chests of drawers!

What's your absolute favorite item ever purchased at an estate sale or online auction?

That’s a toughie! I’ll say the 9x12’ antique Persian Lilihan rug I found at an estate sale two doors down from our house. It had been in the same family for ages (the previous owner was 90 when the sale was held) and I loved being able to keep it in the neighborhood. It also looks gorgeous against the brick floors in our sunroom!

What's your favorite Black Rock Galleries purchase?

A stunning pair of painted Chinese military panels that now hang in our dining room. Not only are they gorgeous, but they were the deal (steal!) of the century.

Any tips or advice for online auction or estate sale newbies?

1. Make a habit out of checking your favorite auction house’s sales.

2. Flag the items you want to keep track of so you don't miss out.

3. And *always* check dimensions.
