Harry Laurie, retired UPS employee-turned-neighborhood “Santa Claus” of sorts often surprised friends and neighbors with carefully selected gifts tailored to their interests — be it a book, music CD, or movie DVD — delivered straight to their doorstep.

A Man of Many Passions

Harry Laurie was more than just a retired UPS employee; he was a man of many passions.

From his early days as a Beatnik, wearing berets and listening to Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, and the Kingston Trio, to his later adventures as a certified hypnotherapist and art collector, Harry lived life to the fullest.

He was a self-proclaimed "hippie without the drugs" and drove a VW Bug.

His love for art was evident in the diverse range of paintings that adorned his home, reflecting his eclectic tastes and his unwavering commitment to creativity.

The Evolution of Harry's Collection

Harry's collection is a reflection of his life's journey, from his early days as a young art enthusiast to his later years as a seasoned collector.

While his friends were aware that he amassed some sort of an art collection, only a select few saw some select pieces.

Based on his outward appearance, they never imagined how extensive it was, "...Few others could even guess by the way he dressed and conducted himself," explains Kevin Coles, family attorney.

His collection boasted works from renowned listed artists like Alexander Calder, Salvador Dali, Banksy, and RC Gorman, alongside treasures from local talents around the world.

Each piece tells a story, capturing the essence of Harry's adventurous spirit and his passion for the arts.

A Tribute to Friendship and Memories

Harry's friendships were as diverse and colorful as his art collection.

Coles writes, "Harry was born, grew up, lived and died in Black Rock. He knew everyone there and everyone knew him. He was the pulse of Black Rock. He knew everything that was going on, past and present."

Another childhood friend, John Donovan, fondly remembers their early days in Black Rock, where Harry's mother, Mary Cronin, played a central role in shaping their lives. Mary's warmth and unique perspective left a lasting impression on both John and Harry, instilling in them a sense of curiosity and a love for the unconventional.

"Black Rock was the kind of place that created friendships that seem to last for ages as I suspect many of the people reading this can attest to," writes John Donovan.

"You don't see or hear from people for years on end but then, in some extraordinary circumstance, you end up in their company and instead of forty odd years having passed, its like you had spoken only last week"

Their friendship, rooted in Black Rock's tight-knit community, added depth to Harry's collection, as he shared his adventures and discoveries with those closest to him.

The Art of Travel Through Harry's Eyes

Harry's love for art took him on adventures across the globe. From the museums of Europe to the local art scenes of far-flung destinations, his travels were more than just sightseeing.

His excursions were opportunities to immerse himself in different cultures, explore new ideas, and to forge connections with artists and collectors around the world.

According to David, "Harry traveled to several places to add to his collection. Most of the art and posters are signed by the artist;several are AP ('Artist’s Proofs'), some with a personal note addressed to Harry."

Each trip yielded new treasures for Harry's collection, adding depth and richness to his already diverse portfolio.
