Update: The Bald & the Beautiful
BRG Happenings | PUBLISHED 05.10.20 | Jennifer Ventresca
The coronavirus may have delayed the snip of sharp scissors and the whirring hum of the electric razor for the daughter of BRG's managing partners, Gemma, but this brave fifth grader has officially bared her beautiful bald head for her elementary School's Team Teddy to benefit the St. Baldrick's Foundation.
Some of you may recall that back in February, BRG offered to match up to $5,000 of money raised by Gemma for Team Teddy. Well the results are in! Gemma was able to raise $3,199 and with BRG's match, that total comes to $6,398.
This was no easy decision for Gemma, whose long chocolate brown hair is an important part of her identity. Gemma astutely noticed that there seems to be far fewer girls than boys who participate in the annual fundraising event to benefit the St. Baldrick's Foundation whose purpose is to help fight childhood cancers, but that isn't waylaying her desire to help.
In addition to shaving her head to raise funds for the St. Baldrick's Foundation, Gemma also donated her long, flowy locks to Locks of Love, an organization that uses human hair donations to make quality children's wigs for those whose medical conditions has caused them to lose their hair permanently.
Her motivation for baring her head? She simply wanted to support people -- especially girls -- who loose their hair because of cancer to let them know it's not so bad not having hair. When asked how she feels about her new "do," Gemma exclaimed, "I love it!"
Gemma was a member of "Team Teddy" which was founded for a Fairfield student, Teddy Gerber, who was diagnosed with cancer at the age of eight and passed away shortly thereafter. Team Teddy raises money to work for finding a cure for pediatric cancer through the St. Baldrick's Foundation.
There's still time to give
